The Delafield Library is seeking an energetic, enthusiastic individual for the position of Youth Services Assistant. This part-time position (approx. 30 hours/week) will work diligently with the head of Youth Services librarian and will report to the Library Director.

Typical responsibilities of position:
• Provides age appropriate children’s programs, events and materials
• Provides reference and reader’s advisory services
• Maintains children’s department, materials & supplies
• Acts as a liaison to community, organizations, schools, etc.
Major duties and responsibilities:
• Prepares and/or assists in planning, organizing and implementation of children’s events:
o Storytimes
 Twice per week for about 35 weeks each year
 Themed craft/early literacy activity each week
 Selects books & materials for each weekly theme & book display
o Summer Reading Program
 Contracts with summer performers; hosts events
 Solicits sponsor donations
 Visits schools to promote summer events
 Organizes & maintains coupon list, incentive inventory & prize board
 Organizes & implements summer events
o Winter Reading Program
o Kitchen Science Kids
o Special events such as Family Scarecrow Making/Chili Supper, Fire Fighter, Santa & Super Hero Special Storytimes; Christmas Crafts for Kids; Yoga Storytimes; Easter Crafts & Play; PBJ Day; Stuffed Animal Sleepover; etc.
• Prepares, presents & maintains inventory of early literacy activities
• Maintains special collections/areas
• Prepares and distributes press releases of youth programming to schools and day cares
• Posts current youth services activities to staff
• Maintains Children’s Garden and materials
• Attends weekly departmental meeting with Youth Services Staff

Knowledge and Abilities:
• Considerable knowledge of modern library science theory and practices
• Display excellent customer service skills both with patrons in house and in community forums
• Ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public, peers and supervisors
• Ability to perform reference work using both print and digital resources
• Demonstrates flexibility and teamwork
• Ability to answer questions from the general public
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations
• Ability to work independently, organize and prioritize tasks, respond to varied/changing work demands and make decisions as required
• Ability to plan, organize and carry out a program of library service independently and/or in conjunction with head of Youth Services
• Ability to interact pleasantly, constructively and cooperatively with library patrons and staff
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
• Must be proficient with Microsoft Office products and personal computers

Physical Demands of the Position:
Employee must be able to:
• Sit, stand, walk, climb, stoop, bend, twist and reach
• Talk and hear; use the telephone
• Have far vision at 20 feet or further; have near vision at 20 inches or less
• Lift and carry 50 pounds or less
• Handle processing, picking up and shelving books
• Push and pull objects weighing 60 to 80 pounds on wheels
• Travel to meetings outside of the library; provide own transportation to said events

Environment & Working Conditions:
• Primarily an inside work environment
• Flexible work hours
• Evening and weekend hours required

Education & Experience:
• Bachelor’s Degree in related field
• 2 years+ of previous Library experience preferred
• 2 years+ of customer service experience preferred
